Please Note – This post has a little bit of blood-n-guts towards the end that some might not appreciate if you don’t like to learn about cleaning wild game!
A little over a week ago, my mom and I took a weekend and went to B.O.W. (Becoming An Outdoors Woman – KANSAS)
We tried some new things, meet new people, and had a great time! Mom is an old veteran at going to this (she’s on what.. her fifth year??) but this was my first time! I wasn’t too sure what I was getting myself into, but ended up loving the classes and can’t wait to go back again next time!
Friday afternoon, she took Archery, and I went with Outdoor Photography. This particular picture didn’t come from my photography class, but when we were going for a walk up to the horse barn. I just love the view from our Flint Hills!
Friday evening, we had a “Self-Defense” mini-session, where we learned about escaping from zip-ties, duct-tape, and different ways to defend yourself in everyday situations. In the two right pictures, you can see our instructor pretending to be the “attacker” and the ladies practicing their pepper-spray skills with silly string! It was not only educational, but humorous to watch!
Our second class (Saturday morning), was Dutch Oven Cooking. We had a great time and so many yummy things came out of that class! It was a frigid morning out, so much so that it started sleeting on us.
So what do you do then?
Crawl inside the campfire ring!
We started the class off by making a delicious and simple “Mountain Man Breakfast”. It had a mixture of hash browns, sausage, green pepper and onion, cheese and milk. We let it cook over a bed of hot coals for about 25 minutes and then served – It was amazing!!
The next thing to make is.. Dessert, of course!
In the top picture and two right ones, you can see the Cinnamon Peach Cobbler we made. It was topped with a Cranberry Cinnamon Granola and came out crunchy, warm and sweet!
The bottom picture is our Cast Iron Coffee Cake. Both of these were extremely simple to make and tasted even better than when baked in the oven!
Our Saturday afternoon class was Wild Game Cooking. We made a variety of appetizers to serve the entire group of gals at B.O.W. and had a great time while making them!
We started with cleaning and cooking some pheasant breasts, while a few others worked on making the Venison Sausage Stackers with Herbed Cream Cheese.
After that, we made the Sweet-N-Sour Venison Cocktail Meatballs.
The last couple of menu items were the Pheasant Nuggets with a Nippy Pineapple Sauce (basically a pineapple and horseradish sauce) and then Fiesta Pheasant Cups with Mini Tomatoes and Avocado.
Every single dish that came out of that kitchen tasted amazing, and by the time supper rolled around, I almost didn’t even want any!
Our last class (Sunday morning) was Small Game Cleaning. I won’t go into too many details about it, but we did end up getting everything in that sink cleaned (As far as I know of at least!) and cooked.. We ended the class with a squirrel stew, cornbread and fried squirrel!
All in all, we had a great time over the weekend and I can’t wait to see what is going to be offered again this fall!

I could totally do this minus skinning the game. Nope. That Breakfast mix looks delish and the peach cobbler. Sign me up. – Yolo

Apparently, at least according to my grandmother, I loved squirrel meat as a child. I can’t say that I remember eating it, but I do remember eating a lot of deer and rabbit.

Sounds very interesting! I am convinced I would die if I had to survive on my own. I can’t kill anything LOL! I know that is apart of survival. Other than that I know I would have loved this weekend!
