Hello all! Yesterday I had the privilege to go with one of my brothers to feed his cows. But this time there’s a special new addition to his cow/calf herd: Dixie!
Dixie was born Wednesday, January 13. Isn’t she cute?
Anyway, my brother had to put an ear tag on Dixie without her mama, Viola, chasing him. So we went during feeding time.
He dumped some feed…
Sally May came right away, and Viola came soon after:
Soon both cows were eating happily, and we headed out to Dixie.
Dixie was caught and the tag put on her:
Have you ever had a calf suck on your hand? It’s very warm, and slightly squishy… if you don’t like either of those things, I wouldn’t recommend trying it. 😉
After she was tagged, she ran off and started calling for her mama. Viola came running, of course, just as soon as the gate was opened.
And so cow and calf were reunited. See the four extra legs behind Viola? Dixie started nursing right away.
Then, after leaving the cows and calf, we headed to a different pasture to feed the heifers that were born last year.
We get into the pen and start honking the horn (Why do we honk the horn? Go to Feedin’ the Cattle to see a little about that), and Belle and Joy come running.
Random tidbit of information: Belle is Dixie’s big sister!
My brother dumped the feed and commenced breaking the ice on the pond, and the two heifers started eating.
Joy was a little suspicious of the camera at first, but she was soon eating like I wasn’t there.
And that sums up my visit with the heifers/cows! Thanks for reading!

This looks like a great way to spend the day. Dixie is so cute, but I don’t think I would let her suck on my hand.

Viola looks like a healthy little calf! I am sure she’s going to grow up big and strong like her mother. It must be fun to experience stuff like that, feeding the cows, and just being close to nature!
