A very special person surprised me recently with a trip to Oklahoma to visit The Pioneer Woman Mercantile, Deli and Bakery with a couple of friends – And it was a blast! We had a fun drive down to Pawhuska, a great time wandering through the Me rc., got to pick out a variety of pastries at the Bakery upstairs, and then a delicious meal to top it all off at the Deli. Keep reading to here more about our time there!
So we found our way to a parking spot (took a little bit!) and walked over to the Merc. The first thing to catch our eye was this beautiful, vintage neon sign.
As soon as you walk inside the front doors of the Mercantile, a variety of items catch your eye. It almost takes a mental plan to be made on how you’re going to get to look at everything!
One of the first items to greet you is Ree’s own book about how she met Marlboro Man. Haven’t checked it out yet? Here’s a quick peek and link to it:
“Popular blogger and cookbook author Drummond shares the story of her courtship and marriage to her husband, whom she refers to as Marlboro Man. Though Drummond grew up in Oklahoma, she never imagined she’d end up there for good. After four years of college in Los Angeles, Drummond was only making a pit stop home before moving to Chicago. A chance encounter with a… cowboy in a local bar changes everything… A rancher with deep roots in the land he works, Marlboro Man isn’t going anywhere, which means Drummond has to decide whether, to be with him, she’s willing to give up her dream of moving to Chicago… –Kristine Huntley” – From Booklist.
Pick up your own copy of her story, here.
While I could never in an entire blog post tell you about all of the great items we found at the Merc., I can show you a few of my favorites! The best one right here being the butter dish.
I. did. not. get. this.
But I should have!!
Thankfully though, I found it on her website, here, for $12. – I mean, seriously?! How cute!
Some of the items there were exclusive to the Mercantile and not to be found in just any Walmart. Which made the trip even more fun! For an example of one of these exclusive items, check out the Mackenzie-Childs green floral cake carrier!
If I had an endless bank account and lots of room inside of the pickup cab, I would have gotten one of these cattle heads (no, they’re not real – no worries!). Although I love this one, I fell in love with the one towards the end of this post.
While nothing I got was a gift for anyone, I should have thought ahead and gotten an item wrapped for myself to take home! The gift wrapping station was to-die-for with all of the bright florals and colors. Next time (yes, hopefully, there is another trip!), I’ll be sure to gift wrap at least one item!
So we walked through the entire Merc. and then decided to venture upstairs. And you know what we found?
The bakery! Yes, it really does smell just as good as it looks! We picked out a variety of little pastries and items and then moseyed over to the seating area to look at some books and eat our delicate little confections.
Something fun that I never expected was getting to see the baked goods, fudge, and more being made right in front of our eyes. It was fun to watch the process, but I think I figured out their reasoning for giving us this inside peek into the workings of the bakery… They wanted us to start salivating over their goodies!
So we wrapped up our visit upstairs and went back down for one last walk through of the Merc. I would have loved one of these Mackenzie-Childs floral tea kettles, but maybe Christmas, right?
And here is my favorite shot from the entire visit! I loved the bull head in the middle of the brick wall, with the bright colored dishes all around it. If you manage to visit here someday, be sure to look for this guy and think of me!
We had walked through both the Merc. and the Bakery, and our stomachs were giving the signal that it was time for lunch. We stood in line for maybe 10 – 15 minutes to get inside and then were ushered to a cozy table with a couch and pillows along one side. Here you can see that famous “National Biscuit Co.” sign that we so often see on The Pioneer Woman website – I love the wood cut-out of the flowers even more now that we’ve seen them in person!
We started our meal off with a cold jar of water and visited for a bit while enjoying the tantalizing smells coming from the kitchen. From where we sat, I watched the wood-fired oven put out hot dish after dish and I drooled over each and every one.
The guys in our little group are what we call “connaisseurs of chicken fried steak” and they gave PW’s a try. The verdict? It was pretty amazing stuff! Made with real beef rib-eye that’s been breaded and grilled, served with cream gravy and rich mashed potatoes.
My meal? It was a hard choice between several items on the menu, but I finally went with the White Spinach Lasagna. It was FABULOUS! Creamy parmesan sauce between layers of artichokes, sauteed garlic spinach, and five different kinds of cheese made for a mouthwatering dish. While I would have loved to have a little meat somewhere in the lasagna, it was delicious without it and I would definitely have this at the top of my choices next time we go!
One last thing! If you’re curious what I brought home out of this trip, it wasn’t much.. But I’ll show you!
I found a Buckskin color leather traveler’s notebook (actually made by Rustico), but I had just recently started getting interested in traveler notebooks (check out the Ultimate Review here!) so I was excited to get one from the Merc. While you can’t find it on the Merc.’s website, it is on Rustico’s!
And then I got a few little notebooks! I loved the floral pattern so much that I had to get an extra one. Who knows, it just might pop up on here as a giveaway sometime!
So if you’re just looking for a fun place to visit, a huge fan of The Pioneer Woman’s, or looking for a wonderful chicken fried steak, be sure to plan a trip to The Pioneer Woman’s Mercantile soon!

That woman is a supreme marketing machine, and I have to admit I don’t get it. Her recipes aren’t great and her obedience to her husband and life just gets my goat. Each to their own and all that though! Glad you had a good trip.
