We’ve all been there. Time is running out and you still have to find a gift for the farmer in your life.
It needs to be thoughtful enough, but still practical. Special, but still functional…
You need something unique.
Which is why we now have this handy list of gift ideas! It’s sure to get some creative juices flowing and there are enough suggestions you might just end up with two or three different gifts…
(Before you ask, this list does not include a new pick-up, combine, tractor, or semi. You’re at a whole different level than me if you’re surprising him with one of those!!)
In no particular order, here are some great gift ideas:
New work boots and good socks (cold weather wool, anyone?)
Wifi weather station
Check the outside temperature, wind speed, wind direction, rainfall, humidity, solar radiation, barometric pressure, and UV, all from the comfort of your couch with a weather station like the one linked above. One reviewer mentions using one of this brand for 15 years before deciding to purchase another as well.
Farm toys
White tractors? New Holland combines? Hesston swathers? We need it alllll. Feed his inner child and give the occasional small toy. My hubby has a growing collection and feels that it’s just not quite Christmas without a farm toy waiting until the tree for him! Keep in mind the sizing before you buy. Mine collects mostly 1/64th scale (3 to 4 inches tall), but you could go up to 1/32, 1/16, etc.
Farm toy display pieces
This falls pretty close to the suggestion above, but it’s more for people that want to set up displays and farm dioramas. This could include mini trees, ground cover, gravel, buildings, telephone poles, animals, people, etc. Again, keep an eye on the scale that you’re buying for. If your machinery is 1/64 scale, don’t buy 1/16 scale people and buildings!
An aerial photo of your farm
Gift cards to Cabela’s, favorite restaurants, etc
A new gun, custom holster, gun scope, and ammo
This gift requires a bit more forethought, but could definitely be a favorite! There are so many places you could start looking for guns, ammo, holsters, etc., that I didn’t even bother to add a link. But have fun!!
Hunting supplies
This kinda goes along with the new gun, scope, etc. But if your hubby is a hunter, you might have an idea of what new toys he’s been drooling over. Put together a “basket” (one of those five-gallon buckets with a seat on top) of supplies including ammo, beef jerky, calls, backpack, knives, etc.)
Binoculars (with a smartphone photograph adapter!)
Gift certificate for truck detailing
This is a super fun idea (if you have the ability and time) and want to give him a gift certificate for you to clean and detail his truck. Granted, it will take a fair amount of elbow grease after the holidays, but it’s a super inexpensive, yet thoughtful gift.
Streamlight headlight or flashlight
Family tree + history
This would be a good project for the whole family to participate in. So if your guy is interested in family history at all, get the grandparents together and start learning! Track your ancestors, learn stories of the farm, their lives, beginnings, etc. Use a voice recorder and record their stories and conversations, as well as take notes. Create a binder later on of what you learned! It’ll be something you treasure for years to come.
Farm-branded clothing
By this I mean putting your brand on a sweatshirt or ball cap. We have a local business that can design a logo or something and then print things up with it. It’s been talked of more than once how fun it’d be to have license plates, ball caps, etc. with our farm name on them!
RTIC mugs
Branded belt buckles
This is similar to the suggestion above, but possibly a bit more expensive. There are several places you can have create a custom belt buckle, but here are a few to check out: Molly’s Custom Silver, Lone Star Silversmith, Montana Silversmiths, HyO Silver.
DJI Mavic Mini Drone
I don’t have one of these yet, but just imagine the footage you could get during harvest time!! (I know, I’m drooling.) Check out the DJI Mavic Mini drone on Amazon — It weighs just a pinch over half a pound, has a 30 minute flight time, and doesn’t need to be registered with the government (in the United States or Canada) to be flown.
Rubber boots
Some of the newer boots on the farm are the LaCrosse AlphaBurlys. You can choose from a variety of insulation thickness (400, 800, 1600 grams, etc.) and if the reactions from the guys here is any indication, they seem to be going over pretty well! Keep an eye on some of the Amazon listings, in the past I think some have had coupons that knocked the prices down a good bit!
T-shirts or hoodies with favorite machinery brands
Smoker or grill
From Traegers to Blackstones, and everything in between, if your guy is a grilling maniac, look at getting a new toy for him! (Think of it this way, the more he grills, the less you have to cook!) If you want a cheaper alternative to this option, put together a basket of grilling/smoking related goodies. You could include an assortment of rubs, tools, wood chips, a grilling basket for veggies, and a rack of ribs! (Hint, hint…)
Boot/glove dryer (dries four items at a time!)
Gun safe + humidifier
This is a larger purchase, but can be very beneficial to the whole family if the gun collection has outgrown the top shelves in the closet! Check out the Liberty brand safes (Made in the good ol’ USA) or even one of the smaller home safes if you don’t need a full-sized one. (I’ve read that some of the compact safes aren’t made in America though.)
Cast iron skillet
This is probably a gift that I mostly want for myself. (I’m obsessed!) If you’re new to cast iron cookware, I highly recommend finding an older skillet (Wagner, Griswold, Birmingham Stove and Range, or even a nice, unmarked one) with a smooth cooking surface to use. While a lot of people start with a modern Lodge skillet, they have a very gritty surface and I find them to be a challenge to work with. You won’t have to spend an arm and a leg to get a decent skillet, but please send me an email if you have any questions! (contact@prairiegalcookin.com) For more info on cast iron cookware, check out the website Boonie Hicks or Cast Iron Collector.
Junk drawer kit
This is a handy little round-up of practical things that the guys are always needing: Electric or duct tape, various batteries, wrenches and other assorted tools, flashlights, gloves, WD-40, etc. Just find a five-gallon bucket (perhaps a clean, new one!) and fill it up with a bunch of these items. Let’s talk shop:
Tools
Whether he loves Snap-On, Milwaukee, Craftsman, Icon, or whatever, tools are usually a pretty safe gift. While I say that, it can be a challenge to find the exact set of sockets, wrenches, etc. Play it safe and give a gift card if you can’t locate the exact items! My hubby LOVES the Icon tools from Harbor Freight. They’re quality pieces with a lifetime warranty and similar in design to Snap-On.
Power washer
Tool boxes
Jump-N-Carry portable jump starter
Hitch pins
So hopefully you’ve got a few more ideas floating through your brain! Drop a comment below if you’ve got any suggestions I missed, I (and the other farm wives!) would love to hear them.
Also, keep your eye out for the next couple of posts coming: Skip the Gifts (giving experiences rather than objects), and the Farm Wife Gift Guide.
Happy shopping!
