Today, I’m excited to share with you a recipe from the March 1931 edition of the Farmer’s Wife Magazine. This magazine was published in Minnesota and ran from 1893 to 1939. Although the magazine is no longer going, the recipes are still all around and being used! There’s now a great series of cookbooks that is packed full with those exact recipes from the magazine.
So today I’m sharing these biscuits from “The Farmer’s Wife Harvest Cookbook”. They come out of the oven warm and flaky, and you just can’t wait to dig into them! Not only are they super quick to pull together, but they’re also quite simple (only 5 ingredients!).
You’ll need:
2 cups flour
4 t. baking powder
1 t. salt
4 T. butter
3/4 cup milk
Start by measuring out your dry ingredients.
And then giving them a quick sifting!
Cut your butter into chunks and add to the dry ingredients. Use either your fingers or a couple of knives to work the butter into the dry ingredients.
Once you get the butter all worked in, pour in the milk…
And stir rapidly for a few seconds.
One tip that I’ve found for when rolling out the dough is to put it on a floured cookie sheet. This way, your cookie sheet is the only surface dirty and not your entire kitchen table!
So get your dough set out onto the cookie sheet and knead it vigorously for about 30 seconds.
Then roll it out to about 1/2 inch thick.
Using either your biscuit cutter or a glass drinking cup, cut out your biscuits…
And then place on a baking sheet (or the top of a glass casserole dish) and bake at 400 degrees for 12 minutes.
Pull out and serve warm with some butter and jam!

Easy enough to make, but if you’re someone that doesn’t use a lot of salt, or have to watch the intake of it I recommend halving the called for amount. They were good just on the salty side..

5 STARS! I have always wanted to make biscuits, but never had specialty ingredients like buttermilk on hand… These were so simple and took about 30 minutes from start to finish. There is a slight baking powder flavor if eaten plain, but when eaten with butter or jam (as suggested) they are more delicious than many of the store bought biscuits! Made by hand, you know what the ingredients are and you have control over what your family eats- unlike all of the preservatives and added colors and flavors of prepackaged frozen biscuits… or greasy fast food biscuits… YUCK!
I would TOTALLY recommend giving these a try, you won’t be disappointed!

Never commented on a site before but this one I had to. I just made these biscuits, pulled them out of the oven and they were beautiful, but do the taste as good as they look and are they as flakey as the appear? The verdict.. O MY GOODNESS! These are amazing! I followed the recipe to the letter, wouldn’t change a thing! Thanks so much for sharing this old time favorite. May the Lord bless you.
